SIGs in the Association
On March 12, 2004 the Executive Board of the Ohio Continuing Higher Education Association adopted a resolution establishing seven Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and a Council of Special Interest Groups. The Council of Special Interest Groups and the seven SIGs were established as a Subsidiary Unit of OCHEA in accordance with the OCHEA Constitution and Bylaws. The Special Interest Groups include: Business and Industry Programs; Professional Development Programs; Noncredit Programs; Adult/Nontraditional Credit Programs; Distance Learning Programs; Marketing and Recruitment Functions; and Administration and Policy Functions. Each SIG serves as a network of professional members who share an interest in similar issues and/or functional areas in continuing education. The Special Interest Groups are charged with adding to the professional development opportunities available to members of OCHEA. The SIG-based professional development opportunities focus on information sharing within the SIG and across the Association on trends, concerns and issues, and best practices through the development of break-out sessions at the Annual OCHEA Conference on topics of interest to the SIG membership; the establishment of SIG-based listserv for the exchange of information; the conduct of one-day, drive-in seminars on SIG-based topics of interest; the contribution of articles on SIG-based interests to the Association’s newsletter, The Continuing Educator; and through constituency spanning activities that contribute to a better understanding of the professional practice applications in different institutional types. The seven Special Interest Groups identified are available for affiliation by OCHEA members and members of OCHEA’s Order of Lifelong Learning in Ohio (OLLO) who work in the respective SIG content area or by those interested in leaning about the area of professional practice. Association members are eligible to affiliate with one, two or three Special Interest Groups annually and to engage in the programs and activities sponsored by the SIGs in which membership is held. The listing provided below identifies the professional practice areas encompassed under the respective Special Interest Groups: BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY PROGRAMS
The Council of Special Interest Groups The Chairs of the OCHEA sponsored Special Interest Groups and the Chair and Vice Chair of the Council of Special Interest Groups make-up the Council of Special Interest Groups. The Chair of the Council of Special Interest Groups is appointed by the Association President to serve a two-year term. The Council of Special Interest Groups is responsible for coordinating the programs and activities of the Special Interest Groups and for recommending annually a professional development plan to the Association’s Executive Board. Establishment of Additional SIGs Additional Special Interest Groups (SIGs) may be established by the Council of Special Interest Groups based on the petition of Association members and the identification of the leadership of the proposed new Special Interest Group. The Special Interest Groups are reviewed tri-annually by the Council of Special Interest Groups for continuation for another three-year period; merger with another SIG; or for the dissolution of the SIG. How do you affiliate with the Special Interest Groups? As a member of the Ohio Continuing Higher Education Association, you are eligible to affiliate with up to three SIGs. Members affiliate with the SIGs as a part of the annual membership renewal process. If you are not a member of OCHEA, contact Art Davies, Chair of the OCHEA Membership Committee, at 513.556.9181 or by e-mail at arthur.davies@uc.edu to obtain the OCHEA membership application.
